The Human Resources Generalist is responsible for several human resource activities supporting the organization through work including staffing/recruiting, employee relations, benefits administration and coordinating training activities. *Laguna Hills, CA Location

Work Environment: This will be a hybrid role, working 3 days in the office (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) and 2 days remote (Monday and Friday).

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Staffing/Recruiting

  • source, build and maintain a stream of qualified candidates
  • interview candidates
  • offer letters
  • onboarding and orientation plans for new hires

Benefits Administration

  • employee benefits; medical, dental, vision, life, disability, critical illness, accident, etc.
  • employees with new employee benefits orientation and enrollment, and with benefit changes, life events, and terminations.
  • 5500 filings, Summary Annual Report distribution, and 1095 reporting.
  • with Benefits Manager to set up and manage open enrollment in HRIS system, including updating benefit plans and rate changes and facilitating the transfer of election files to carriers.
  • user guides & training materials for benefits administration and usage.

Manager Guidance and Employee Relations

Provides day-to-day performance management guidance to managers (e.g., coaching, counseling, career development, disciplinary actions).

Works closely with management and employees to improve work relationships, build morale, and increase productivity and retention.

Maintains in-depth knowledge of legal requirements and ensures regulatory compliance for California.

Provides HR policy guidance and interpretation.

Provides guidance and input on business unit restructures, workforce planning and succession planning.

Training and Development

  • Identifies training needs for business units and individual executive coaching needs.
  • Participates in evaluation and monitoring of training programs to ensure success.
  • Follows up to ensure training objectives are met.

Employee Engagement

  • Maintains and updates the Smead Insights intranet site.
  • Manages Smead’s employee recognition program.
  • Act as an ambassador of the company values and culture

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or equivalent education and experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in Human Resources.
  • Working knowledge of multiple human resource disciplines, including recruiting, employee relations, diversity, performance management, and federal and state respective employment laws.
  • SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) or SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP) credential or ability to obtain certification within one year of employment

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
  • Experience with HRIS systems, preferably UKG
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing to ensure complete support and understanding.
  • Ability to identify and solve problems using and adjusting tactics as appropriate to the situation.
  • Ability to set and achieve challenging goals, including the ability to focus personal and team efforts to achieve key business objectives and improve organizational performance.
